Day 15
 Christmas Blessings

VERSE 1
Christmas is coming, the day is soon here,
lift up your glass to wish goodness and cheer.
Think of the ones are struggling, and say:
we pray God be with you today.

VERSE 2
Whether with family or maybe alone,
out with a friend or you’re tucked up at home,
walking the streets or you’re working away,
we pray God be with you today.

CHORUS
We pray good news will meet you,
joy will surround you,
hope will light up your way.
And we ask God to bless you,
send his grace for you,
we pray God be with you today.

VERSE 3
Whether you're loaded or maybe you’re skint,
under the weather or filled to the brim,
doubtful, or thankful, or losing your way,
we pray God be with you today.

Listening to these words brought to mind:

  • a sixteen-month old child killed by her mother's girlfriend and especially those who feel let down by the authorities they thought could keep her safe;

  • families beginning to wonder if this Christmas will be another with no family gathering;

  • those whose 'homes' are uncared for, or who have no roof over their head;

  • the bereaved; whether as a result of COVID or something else;

  • those who are struggling to make ends meet, perhaps fighting the commercialism of Christmas;

  • those who are afraid;

  • refugees;

  • the hungry;

  • the sick.

God, you hear the calls,

the cries,

the voices raised,

the silent whispered prayers.

Israel, in her exile, crying out for a messiah.

Elizabeth, in her barrenness, calling out for a son.

Shepherds, in their poverty, praying for a saviour.

Mary, in her innocence, searching for a safe place to give birth.

And still today the voices cry out.

In Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan,

in China, and here in the UK.

The homeless, in their vulnerability, asking for a welcome.

The rich, in their emptiness, longing for acceptance.

The lonely, in their busyness, crying for community.

The families, in their arguments, praying for peace.

God, you hear the calls,

the cries,

the voices raised,

the silent whispered prayers.

Hear our prayers today,

and help us, where we can, to be the answer to someone else's prayer.

In Jesus' name,

Amen.
